December 18th "Pot-holder Swap"...

Yep, it's true, we will be having a "Pot-holder Swap" at our Dec. 18th meeting.  Between now and then make a quilted pot-holder and bring it on Dec. 18th.  We thought that non-holiday fabric would allow us to enjoy the pot-holder throughout the year.  So pick some of your favorite modern colors and go to town.  Two layers of Insul-Bright for the batting should work nicely, making sure that the "shinier" metal looking side faces out on each side... (Only $3.99/yd at Beverly's and you can use a 40% off coupon on it).  Pick your shape; square, round, hexigon...
We'll lay them out, draw numbers and whoever goes last of course gets her pick from them all...

PS - I'm sure you won't be able to make just one

October 16th Meeting

Guild Labels by shanleytulip
Guild Labels, a photo by shanleytulip on Flickr.
It was another great day for sewing in San Diego. Susan printed up some labels using the same graphics as the business cards that Amanda whipped up for us. The labels can be used to attach to our donation quilts. There was a little fading after one wash but what a great idea!

We had a little show and tell as usual and a couple of the pictures are up on Flickr, there is a link on the right side of this blog.

Pam also asked if we would be interested in doing a potholder swap so stay tuned for the official announcement!

Plenty of Room

Smaller Space by shanleytulip
Smaller Space, a photo by shanleytulip on Flickr.
We were all working too hard to take pictures during show and tell so here's the one picture I managed to snap before everyone showed up. While it wasn't our usual space, we were all able to spread out and get lots done. Check out Amanda's beach glass quilt on Flickr, it's even better in person!  Or Jessica's adorable bibs.

We're up to 8 squares for our donation quilt. Please consider making one and bringing it to the next sew-in or meetup. We would love to be able to finish the quilt(s) and donate to the NICU soon.

September Sew-In Room Change

I just got a call from Quilter's Paradise and it seems that the big room we usual occupy for sewing day is reserved this Sunday in our time slot. Our group just got a little bigger than we originally anticipated (woo-hoo!). The sew-in is still on, we just have to use the smaller room. There is still a cutting area and ironing area in the small room, just less tables (could fit about 8 sewing machines). I hope everyone can still make it, just maybe bring a few hand sewing projects this Sunday! See you then!

Weekday Happy Hour

On the flickr group, we posted about having a weekday Happy Hour but I wanted to make sure we covered all of the bases and posted it here too.  Tuesday, September 13th.  Place and time to be decided....  Anyone interested in attending and/or helping set up the night?  Thanks!

Charity Quilts Requested

We have a request from UCSD NICU for baby quilts that are at least 52 x 44 to cover the living space for the premies.  We have our wonky star quilt but is there any interest in producing baby quilts for the UCSD NICU?  Thanks!

Now we are official?

What makes a quilt guild official? I have no clue. We don't charge dues, we don't really have much of an agenda at our meetings, BUT we have a business card.

At our last sew-in, we came up with the idea to make some kind of card to leave at the local quilt shops to recruit new members and spread the word about our little group. Plus bonus: some shops give you a discount if you are a member of a guild, so we can just flash this little card and let the discounts come rolling in! Come on by the next sew-in August 21st at Quilter's Paradise from 11-3pm to pick one up! Keep it in your wallet, use it as a coaster, or frame it and hang it over your mantel :) Hope to see everyone there!

May Recap

I think the SDMQG had the best idea to beat the "May Gray" here in San Diego.... lots of sewing. We started out the month with another sew-in at Quilter's Paradise in Escondido. We even doubled our turnout from the first sew-in. At that rate, we will have a packed house in June! We all met a few new friends and got a lot done. (pictures thanks to Sandi).

Here is Angela with her ADORABLE little sewing machine and crazy scrap pile.
This is me and Jenifer, working hard or hardly working?
Susan with her fabulous sewing machine. Look at all that quilt in there!
And finally this is Shanley working on her 47 bazillionth quilt this year :)

Our next get-together was a dinner meeting at Cozymels in UTC. We ate good food, showed off our fabulous projects, and even happened to be sitting by a fellow quilter at the very next table. (picture thanks to Tiffany)

So don't worry if you missed any of the May fun, because our next sew-in is June 19th from 11-3 at Quilter's Paradise. We hope to see you there!

Flyers and Beverly's Fabrics

Central Park by shanleytulip
Central Park, a photo by shanleytulip on Flickr.
Here's a quick snap of some of the fabrics at our local Beverly's. They aren't all fabric but they do have bright prints, flannels and bits of some of the popular lines.

Any graphic artist-y types out there? I was in Beverly's this weekend and asked about their guild support. While they don't have a place to post flyers publicly, they are happy to post in the staff room and let people know of our little group.

Also they offer a 10% discount to guild members without requiring a card but it might be good for us to come up with some for other shops. Sign up for their monthly flyer, it almost always has a coupon for 25% off.

Wonky Star Donation Blocks  - I'd like to offer a $10 gift card to Beverly's for anyone who makes a wonky star block for our first donation quilt (details here).  Each block you turn in will get you one chance to win.  I'll announce the winner at the July sewing day.

Now back to the solids I picked up yesterday!

May 19th Meet, Chat and Share

Kerstin had a great idea since we're not meeting to sew again for quite awhile - "Hi everyone, we talked about an additional meeting today at the sew in just to socialize and talk about our favorite topic! So how about a meeting on Thursday, May 19th at Cozymels in UTC? It's right next to the UTC mall and easily accessible from the 5 and 805. This place is pretty big, but also relatively empty on a weeknight. Please let me knowif this day works for everyone and who's planning to come, so I can make a reservation. Thanks!"

Probably around 6:30 or 7 pm.  There may be additional information on our Flickr group.

Feel free to bring blocks for our donation quilt!

Sewing Saturday

Our first official Sewing Day was a success! Lots of sewing, socializing, and chatting about all things quilting. Does it get any better?! Let's do it again soon, ladies. We are working on a schedule with Quilters Paradise and will post more info when we get it.

Here is a little peek at all the fun....

I hope to see everyone at the next event!

Our First Group Activity

Although we have only had two meetings of our guild, I have learned that we have quite a talented group of modern quilters here in San Diego County. Since I was given the task of coming up with a group activity at our first meeting, I thought there is no better way to showcase our sewing skills and big hearts than with a charity quilt. One of our members, Barb, has visited an orphanage in Mexico that she thinks would be the perfect place for our quilt to go, so we will be making it for the children down there. I happened to have a few extra yards of this Kaffe Fasset print in my stash which will be the backing of this quilt and our color palette inspiration...

I wanted to pick a block that was modern, used scraps, and came together quickly, so I chose the wonky star as seen below.

It would be wonderful if we could all make at least one block for this quilt. A scrappy wonky star tutorial can be found here. Instead of the 4 inch blocks in the tutorial, please cut 5 inch blocks for the final block size of 14 inches. Use the Kaffe Kasset print as your color inspiration and have fun! Make one block, two blocks, or no blocks. This is not a requirement, just a group activity to enjoy. If you are new to sewing or don't have a big scrap collection yet, we can work on making these at our future sew in. I hope to see everyone there!

Monthly Sewing Day Preferences

We talked at our last meeting about using space up at Quilter's Paradise in Escondido.  I'm working out potential dates and wanted to check if Sundays were okay with everyone?  Please comment here or on our Flickr/Facebook pages.

Stay tuned for our first charity project from Amanda!  It's going to be lots of fun.

February Meeting

Sorry for the late notice on the blog, but the February meeting will be at my place in Carmel Valley today (2/19) at 1pm. Email me for direction: platty82@yahoo.com. Bring something for show-n-tell and some snacks if you wish. I hope to see everyone there!

Also, check out our sweet logo created by our very own Shanley. We are well on our way to becoming a real guild! The code for the button above can be found on her blog at: www.matildapaprika.blogspot.com/2011/02/new-project.html . She also started a Facebook group, so join in on the fun.

Next Meeting - Feb 19th

Our next meeting will be February 19th.  Please let us know where in the county you're coming from and we'll try to pick someplace central.  We won't be able to have a sew-in this month but are still brainstorming ideas.

Thursday, February 3, 2011

We are looking for meeting space now!

If anyone has any suggestions or recommendations for a meeting space, please contact us.  We are trying to come up with options for a monthly meeting/sew-in.

Thanks!

First Meeting

Our first meeting is tomorrow, Saturday, January 22nd at the Mission Valley Corner Bakery, 1pm.  I can't wait to meet my fellow quilters.  :)
