The New Year for the San Diego Modern Quilt Guild began with our first meeting on January 12, 2014. We were happy to see so many returning members!
Our new president Deb started off with a few announcements:
1) If you are going to the So Cal MQG meet up on January 18, please check in here to coordinate carpool and driving assignments.
2) Anyone going to Road to California? Check our Facebook page for discussion.
Then on to the main events!
SDBee: we collected these colorful string blocks (above) for Angela G. Can't wait to see how they look put together! Pam gave out kits for blue slab blocks (directions here). Bring the finished blocks to the February 9 or March 9 meetings. Theresa M. is on deck for February.
Charity Quilts: The Urban Chicken (4Q13) top (right) is pieced and off to Chris for quilting. When done, Jen is on binding duty. The Wonky Cross (3Q13) top is at Amanda's for quilting, with Susan M. waiting in the wings to bind.
For our first charity project of 2014, we had an in-meeting Baby Quilt Challenge - Julie H. had donated several bee blocks (left) she had brought over from her PA days. Several volunteers split up the blocks and spent the Sew-In time assembling and embellishing them into three incubator-sized quilt tops. In February we'll be looking for volunteers to quilt and bind them. Their ultimate destination will the the UCSD NICU.
Swaps! Swaps! Swaps! We have a couple of fun swaps scheduled for upcoming meetings. For the February 9 meeting, we'll be swapping 2.5" solid strips. If you want to participate, please sign up on this Flickr page, so we can get an idea of how much fabric we'll each need to bring.
For the April 13 meeting, we will be having another of our very popular grocery bag swaps. No sign-up necessary - everyone who makes a bag to swap can participate. Need ideas? Links to some wonderful tutorials can be found here.
Dues: Membership dues for 2014 are $35. So far 28 people have already renewed. Woo Hoo! Great job, everyone! If you still need to renew, please contact our treasurer, Pam (costal gray on Flickr), to make arrangements. We need to renew our guild's membership with national MQG soon, so please don't delay.
And then it was off to Sew-and-Tell. Lots of great projects were on display. Check out our Flickr pool to see them all.
See you at our next meeting, February 9, 2014 at Quilt in a Day, San Marcos!
